The Eternal Perspective

So, what does it even mean to have an eternal perspective?

It’s not about ignoring life’s problems or constantly talking about Heaven. It’s about understanding that life has a purpose—that we continue after we die, and that we’re here to learn from everything we go through. God sees the whole picture—past, present, and future—while we usually see what’s right in front of us. If life goes on forever, every choice we make matters more than we realize. It’s worth thinking about.

When we look at others through an eternal lens, it changes how we see them. The person who cut you off in traffic? They’re a child of God with eternal potential—just like you. It’s not easy to forgive people, especially with all the bad choices being made in the world. No one enjoys pain or tragedy. But if we understood the full eternal perspective, we’d realize that we agreed to face both good and bad before we came here. We probably didn’t grasp just how hard some things would be—but now we do. Lessons we will teach for eternity.

Let’s be real—it’s easy to talk about having an eternal perspective when life is going well. It’s a lot harder when you’re in the middle of heartbreak or a rough patch. But that’s when it matters the most. Your problems won’t magically disappear, but they will shape you - refine you. They’ll stretch your faith in God, and you’ll receive the strength and guidance you need to keep going. Your life is NOT joyful facing trials, it IS joyful overcoming them. They bring us closer to God. Heavenly Father knows this. That’s why He sent His Son.

So maybe it’s time to rethink what makes a day "good" or "bad." A good day might not be one where everything goes right—it could be a day where you grow a little, learn something important, or help someone else. And maybe a bad day isn’t when things fall apart—it’s when we get so focused on our temporal problems that we forget the bigger picture.

When we live with an eternal perspective, we see our challenges differently. We see His hand in our life. We connect with others more empathetically, with real love and understanding. We listen better. We lift others toward their divine potential. And our prayers shift—not just asking for what we want, but gratitude for what He has given us and seeking to understand God’s will through His eternal perspective. By focusing on eternity, we actually improve our today.

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

You cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created it. In order to understand ourselves, others, and the world around us, we need to be able to change and adapt our perspectives.
